The Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region failed to elect Presiding Member (PM) at the inaugural meeting of the 5th Session of the Mampong Municipal Assembly of the 9th Assembly held on Monday February 12, 2024 at its Assembly Hall. The contest for the position of the Presiding Member for the newly inaugurated Assembly was a straight one between two contestants, Hon. Agyei Tuffour Ebenezer, Assembly Member for Kofiase Atonaso Electoral Area and Hon. Piouse Godfred, Assembly Member for Woraso Electoral Area.
At the end of the first and second round of voting, none of the contestants was able to obtain 33 votes, which technically constitutes 2/3 majority of the total number of the 50-member assembly, expected to be obtained before becoming the PM of the Mampong Municipal Assembly. The 50-member assembly comprises 33 elected members and 15 government appointees plus the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Member of Parliament (MP). Interestingly, Hon Agyei Tuffour Ebenezer had 24 and 23 votes whilst Hon. Piouse Godfred obtained 25 and 26 votes respectively in the two rounds after counting was done by Mampong EC officials, who conducted and supervised the elections
Accordingly, Mr. Kwabena Karikari, Mampong EC chair declared the results of the election and announced that no candidate won the contest to become new PM. He further informed the house that in view of the results another election would be held again in 10 days’ time to elect the PM.The house then continued its deliberations. Regarding the adoption of language for the assembly meetings, members agreed that English, Twi and Sign Language should be the official languages to be used in all meetings of the Mampong Municipal Assembly.Members were briefed on the Standing Order of the Assembly. They were further urged to continue to read more about it and be much more abreast with its provisions so as to be guided in their deliberations and functions as Assembly members.
In view of the fact that the house could not conclude on the election of PM, which was key on the agenda, the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Mohammed Mumuni, who presided to conduct the meeting adjourned the meeting and informed members that they would be notified of the next date for the election of presiding member. Present at the meeting were heads of Department and staff of the assembly, the clergy and the media.
