In recent years, the issue of poor environmental sanitation has been of grave concern to many Ghanaians and has taken a center stage in public discourse in the mainstream and social media especially in relation to its consequences and negative impact in the various cities and towns of the country.

The President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama since assuming the reins of government the second time on January 7, 2025, has once taken the issue very serious and on Saturday September 6,2025 relaunched the National Sanitation Day across the country to encourage Ghanaians to recommit themselves in the fight against poor sanitation especially waste. The President’s initiative among others seek to revive and sustain once vibrant communal spirit among the Ghanaian populace and unite towards addressing socio-economic challenges and motivate Ghanaians to embrace united approach to clean their surroundings at the end of every month, if not every day.


In adherence to the President’s call, the Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Yakubu Issifu on the day of the relaunch, observed the National Sanitation Day by embarking on a massive clean-up exercise which attracted huge commendations in some areas in the municipal capital, Mampong. These areas included the Mampong main lorry park, KIA Station and the Mampong Main Market Area as well as the premises of the Amaniampong Silver Stool.

The exercise was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Yakubu Issifu and the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Mohammed Mumuni and supported by Heads of Department and witnessed heavily choked gutters removed of debris, clearing of filth and cleaning of refuse and other waste products.


Groups of people in the Mampong community came out in their numbers and participated in the clean-up exercise to demonstrate their interest and support for this initiative.Addressing the people after the exercise, Hon. Yakubu Issifu expressed satisfaction at the massive turnout and active participation by the people. He praised them for their selfless commitment and active response to the national call which according to him was a clear demonstration of their high sense of respect to adhere to their social responsibility.
He urged residents of the Mampong municipality to sustain the momentum and avail themselves whenever the sanitation day is observed. He further urged the people to clean their environment each day and not wait till the end of the month before engaging in the clean-up exercise, pointing if people decide to practice good environmental practices filth would not engulf the municipality.



Hon. Yakubu again stressed that he would be more happier to see the people take up the environmental sanitation more serious and practice good environmental sanitation and stop unhealthy practices like indiscriminate dumping of waste in bushy areas and gutters, cease burning of waste and plastics, preventing choked gutters and bush to fester, adding that, by so doing it would help reduce if not prevent insanitary related diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery and fever and also enable the government to spend less on sanitation and use such funds for other projects for their benefit. He assured the public of government’s commitment to fulfill its 2024 elections campaign promises and other promises towards achieving socio-economic development to transform the country. He further assured that the President is seriously making every effort to turn the economy and cited the Agriculture for Economic Transformation policy as one of such game changer interventions and urged the people to take advantage of the policy as the Municipality being agriculture area tend to benefit extremely from it if they fully embrace it.
