The election of a new Presiding Member was held on Thursday, 23rd April 2026 during a duly convened meeting of Assembly Members, Government Appointees, heads of departments and security services, Nananom and the media in the Mampong Municipal Assembly conference hall.

Prior to the election, the Municipal Chief Executive of Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Yakubu Issifu highlighted key issues that affected that day’s sitting. He stated that the Municipal Coordinating Director was mandated to chair inaugural meetings for electing a Presiding Member. He formally introduced Madam Esther Abaching who had been posted from Dormaa West District Assembly to succeed the late Mr. Mohammed Mumuni. He with his driver Mr. Emmanuel Sarfo had sadly passed away. Their funerals were held at Damongo and Mampong respectively. The house observed a minute of silence. He therefore thanked them for their support during that period of mourning. He then presented Madam Abaching as Chairperson and entrusted in her care a successful sitting.

In her address, the Chairperson, Municipal Coordinating Director Madam Esther Abaching expressed her profound honour in welcoming members to the special session convened to elect a Presiding Member.  She indicated that the tenure of the incumbent Presiding Member, Hon. Daniel Oduro was due to expire on 7th May 2026 in accordance with Section 17(4) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).  She outlined key functions of the Presiding Member including presiding over meetings of the Assembly and ensuring accountability in its operations. The Chairperson further commended Hon. Oduro for his dedicated service and his efforts toward promoting unity within the Assembly.  She entreated all contestants to uphold peace, integrity and development throughout the electoral process.  She subsequently invited the Electoral Commission to take charge of proceedings to ensure a free, fair and transparent election.

In accordance with the law, just after the Mampong Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) Boss Mr. Solomon Essuman Barnes had signaled for the voting to begin, his opponent announced his withdrawal from the contest to back the New Town Assembly Member and rallied his supporters to do same.

However, Hon. Yenge Adama Samuel showed a high sense of maturity and compromised by offering his support for his main contender, Hon. Daniel Oduro. The EC consequently reorganized the elections into YES or NO vote for the confirmation of the sole candidate, Hon. Daniel Oduro for the Presiding Member position. The position of the PM was therefore decided by members of the assembly through a YES or NO vote.

At the end of the voting, sorting and counting of ballots, the results as announced by the EC showed that 43 of the Assembly members voted YES to indicate that they want Hon. Oduro to be the Presiding Member while 5 members settled for NO showing otherwise.

Accordingly, the Mampong Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer, Mr. Stephen Kwame Amoako based on the results duly declared Hon. Daniel Oduro as the Presiding Member elect.

Subsequently, the Circuit Court Judge at Nsuta, His Honour Simon Nketia Gaga who was present at the event led Hon. Daniel Oduro to administer the oath of secrecy, the oath of allegiance and the oath of office and further declared that he has duly sworn him into office as the PM to discharge his duty as such.

Delivering his victory and induction speech, the newly sworn-in PM thanked members of the Mampong Municipal Assembly for the confidence they have reposed in him and promised to work in close cooperation with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Yakubu Issifu and other relevant authorities for the overall development of the municipality and the welfare of Assembly members. He urged members to use dialogue in addressing issues and share ideas for the common good of all adding that he will welcome feedback and constructive criticism to enable him to discharge his duties fairly and efficiently.

The meeting was attended by distinguished personalities, including Nananom, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Honourable Assembly Members, Heads of Department, Heads of Security Agencies, judges and members of the media.
