Mampong Municipal Assembly

The Mampong Municipal Assembly (MMA), in collaboration with the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), has actively participated in this year’s (2026) Green Ghana Day tree planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and combating the effects of climate change on Friday 5th June 2026.

The exercise took place simultaneously at the AAMUSTED campus and within the premises of the Mampong Municipal Assembly, bringing together students, lecturers, Assembly staff, environmental officers, and community members in a collective effort to increase the Municipality’s green cover.

Speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive for Mampong, Issifu Yakubu, emphasized the importance of tree planting as a practical response to environmental degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. He noted that trees play a crucial role in improving air quality, conserving water resources, preventing soil erosion, and creating a healthier environment for future generations.

According to the MCE, the Green Ghana initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s forest cover while encouraging citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. He urged residents, institutions, and schools to not only plant trees but also nurture them to maturity to ensure the long-term success of the programme.

Representatives of AAMUSTED highlighted the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. They noted that educational institutions have a critical role to play in promoting environmental awareness and fostering a culture of responsibility among students. The university pledged to continue supporting initiatives that contribute to ecological sustainability and climate resilience.

As part of the exercise, various species of shade and ornamental trees were planted across strategic locations on the university campus and within the Municipal Assembly compound. Participants also received education on proper tree maintenance practices to ensure the survival and growth of the seedlings.

The event formed part of the nationwide Green Ghana Day campaign, an annual initiative spearheaded by the Government of Ghana to encourage mass tree planting and environmental restoration across the country.

Participants expressed optimism that the exercise would contribute significantly to improving the Municipality’s environmental landscape while inspiring greater community involvement in safeguarding natural resources.

The successful collaboration between the Mampong Municipal Assembly and AAMUSTED reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices and creating a greener, healthier future for the people of Mampong and Ghana as a whole.
