The Mampong Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Mampong Municipal Assembly, has successfully concluded a public education campaign aimed at strengthening the Assembly’s revenue mobilization efforts.
The campaign reached communities across the municipality and sought to educate residents on the importance of paying rates, taxes, fees, and levies to support local development and improve the delivery of essential public services. The exercise formed part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to enhance Internally Generated Funds (IGF) through voluntary tax compliance and increased public awareness.
As part of the campaign, revenue education messages in both English and Twi were broadcast through the NCCE’s public address vehicle and various community Information Centres. The awareness exercise targeted market women and men, shop owners, commercial drivers, artisans, property owners, business operators, and the general public.
To broaden the campaign’s reach, Assembly Members, Unit Committee Members, traditional authorities, and Information Centre operators partnered with the NCCE to disseminate educational messages throughout the municipality. Officials also engaged residents directly through community sensitization sessions, explaining the importance of fulfilling their civic responsibility by paying taxes and rates while addressing concerns regarding revenue collection and the utilization of public funds.
Despite challenges such as intermittent rainfall, non-functional Information Centres in some communities, and concerns raised by some residents regarding the use of tax revenues, the campaign was successfully carried out across the targeted communities. The interactive engagements provided an opportunity for residents to ask questions, receive clarifications, and gain a better understanding of the role of local revenue in financing development projects and essential services.
At the end of the exercise, the NCCE encouraged the Mampong Municipal Assembly to sustain regular public education on revenue mobilization, strengthen public engagement, improve customer relations between revenue collectors and taxpayers, and continue promoting transparency and accountability in the utilization of Internally Generated Funds. The Commission noted that these measures would enhance public confidence, encourage voluntary tax compliance, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the Mampong Municipality.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with key stakeholders, including the NCCE, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, and community leaders, to strengthen revenue mobilization and generate the resources needed to accelerate development across the municipality.
