The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mampong Municipal Office, has undertaken a hazard mapping exercise in Mampong Township as part of efforts to identify potential disaster risks and develop effective strategies to prevent and manage disasters within the municipality.
The exercise forms part of NADMO’s proactive approach to disaster risk reduction, aimed at identifying areas that are vulnerable to hazards such as flooding, fire outbreaks, rainstorms, windstorms, sanitation-related challenges, and other emergencies that may threaten lives, property, and livelihoods.
During the hazard mapping exercise, NADMO officials moved through various parts of Mampong Township to identify and assess locations with possible disaster risks. The team gathered information on drainage systems, flood-prone areas, congested communities, vulnerable structures, waste disposal practices, and other environmental factors that could contribute to disaster occurrences.
The data collected from the exercise will assist the Mampong Municipal Assembly and other relevant stakeholders in making informed decisions on disaster prevention, preparedness, and response. It will also support the development of appropriate interventions, including community education, infrastructure improvement, emergency planning, and resource allocation.
As part of the exercise, NADMO engaged residents, community leaders, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about disaster prevention measures. Residents were encouraged to avoid activities that increase disaster risks, including dumping refuse into drains and waterways, building on unauthorized areas, poor waste management practices, and indiscriminate bush burning.
The team also emphasized the importance of community participation in disaster management, encouraging residents to report potential hazards early and cooperate with authorities in implementing safety measures. Community members were advised to keep their surroundings clean, maintain proper drainage channels, and take precautionary measures during periods of heavy rainfall and extreme weather conditions.
Speaking during the exercise, officials from the Mampong Municipal NADMO Office highlighted that hazard mapping is an essential tool for understanding disaster risks and improving emergency preparedness. They noted that early identification of hazards allows authorities and communities to take preventive actions before disasters occur.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with NADMO and other stakeholders to strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts and build a safer and more resilient municipality.
