The Mampong Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with residents, community leaders, Assembly Members, and other stakeholders, actively participated in the National Sanitation Day exercise with a massive desilting campaign at Old Fittermu on Saturday, 4th July 2026. The exercise formed part of the Government of Ghana’s nationwide initiative to improve environmental sanitation, reduce the incidence of flooding, and safeguard public health through regular community clean-up activities.
The sanitation exercise brought together officials of the Municipal Assembly, the Environmental Health Unit, Assembly Members, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, youth groups, and residents who worked collectively to clear choked drains of accumulated silt, weeds, plastics, and other waste materials. The exercise was aimed at restoring the free flow of water through the drainage channels, especially during the peak of the rainy season, to minimize flooding and its associated health and environmental risks.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Issifu Yakubu, led the Assembly’s participation in the exercise and commended the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by the residents. He noted that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of every individual and community.
Addressing participants, Hon. Yakubu emphasized that indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drains remains one of the major causes of flooding and environmental pollution in many communities. He explained that blocked drains not only impede the free flow of rainwater but also create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing organisms, thereby increasing the risk of communicable diseases such as malaria and cholera.
He therefore urged residents to cultivate good sanitation habits by disposing of waste at approved disposal sites, desisting from dumping refuse into drains and waterways, and participating regularly in communal labour and National Sanitation Day activities. According to the MCE, environmental cleanliness is fundamental to protecting lives, preserving property, and promoting sustainable development within the municipality.
Hon. Yakubu further encouraged community members to take ownership of their environment by organizing routine clean-up exercises beyond the monthly National Sanitation Day programme. He stressed that sustaining clean surroundings requires continuous collaboration between the Assembly, traditional authorities, community leaders, and residents.
Residents of Old Fittermu expressed their appreciation to the Municipal Assembly for its leadership and commitment to improving sanitation within the municipality. They noted that the desilting exercise would significantly improve the flow of rainwater through the drains, reduce the likelihood of flooding during heavy rains, and contribute to creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for all.
The exercise also served as an opportunity to educate the public on proper waste management practices, environmental hygiene, and the importance of protecting public infrastructure. Participants were reminded that drains are designed solely for the passage of stormwater and should never be used as refuse disposal sites.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting the National Sanitation Day initiative and implementing programmes that promote environmental cleanliness and public health. The Assembly appealed to all residents to actively participate in future sanitation exercises and adopt responsible environmental practices to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient municipality for present and future generations.
