The Mampong Municipal Assembly has taken a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and improving public health by initiating the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project through the Supply and Installation of Water Purification Systems in Ghana in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Korea.
The project forms part of a broader commitment to addressing the challenges of climate change while ensuring that residents have access to safe, reliable, and clean drinking water. It reflects the Assembly’s dedication to implementing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that improve the well-being of communities and support Ghana’s national climate action agenda.
Under the initiative, modern water purification systems will be supplied and installed in selected communities and public institutions across the Municipality. The systems are designed to provide safe potable water through efficient purification technologies that reduce dependence on traditional water treatment methods, such as boiling water with firewood and charcoal. By reducing the use of these carbon-intensive energy sources, the project will contribute significantly to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
The initiative is expected to generate multiple social, environmental, and economic benefits. In addition to providing reliable access to clean drinking water, the project will help reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, improve hygiene and sanitation, protect natural resources, and lessen pressure on forests caused by excessive fuelwood harvesting. The adoption of cleaner technologies will also contribute to improving air quality and promoting healthier living conditions for residents.
Officials of the Mampong Municipal Assembly described the project as a landmark intervention that demonstrates the Municipality’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, environmental protection, and climate resilience. They emphasized that the partnership with the Government of the Republic of Korea represents a strong example of international cooperation aimed at delivering practical and lasting solutions to global environmental challenges while improving the quality of life of local communities.
The Assembly further noted that the project complements the Government of Ghana’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen climate resilience through environmentally sustainable development initiatives. It also supports the country’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The Municipal Assembly expressed its profound appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Korea for its valuable support and collaboration in making the project a reality. The Assembly acknowledged that such strategic partnerships are essential in mobilizing the resources, expertise, and technology needed to address environmental challenges and improve service delivery at the local level.
The Assembly also called on beneficiary communities, institutions, and stakeholders to actively support the implementation of the project by taking ownership of the installed water purification systems and ensuring their proper operation and maintenance. Residents were encouraged to adopt responsible environmental practices that will complement the objectives of the project and help preserve the Municipality’s natural resources for future generations.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with development partners, government agencies, traditional authorities, and community members to implement sustainable initiatives that promote environmental conservation, improve public health, and enhance the overall socio-economic development of the Municipality.
