The Mampong Municipal Assembly in collaboration with Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) organized a two-day workshop on Next Generation Leadership Training (NGLT) programme for Assembly Members as part of efforts to strengthen local governance, improve leadership capacity, and enhance effective service delivery at the community level on 13th and 14th of July 2026
The two-day customized certificate training programme, titled “Next Generation Local Governance Leadership Training for Members of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)”, was aimed at equipping Assembly Members with the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to effectively perform their constitutional and administrative responsibilities.
The training was organised by the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) and the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG).
The Assembly Member position remains a critical component of Ghana’s decentralised governance system, serving as the main link between the local government authority and the people. The training therefore sought to enhance the capacity of participants to better understand their roles, responsibilities, and obligations while developing innovative approaches to addressing challenges within their electoral areas.
The NGLT programme builds on the 2024 nationwide orientation and training programme for Assembly Members and focuses on developing the competencies required for effective leadership, accountability, strategic thinking, and inclusive local development.
During the training, participants were taken through key areas including decentralisation and the local governance framework, legislative and oversight responsibilities, community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, communication skills, and strategies for effective representation at the local level.
The programme also provided an opportunity for Assembly Members to reflect on their performance, share experiences, build professional networks, and explore career opportunities within local governance and national development leadership.
At the end of the training, participants are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of local governance laws, policies, and procedures; strengthen their ability to contribute meaningfully to Assembly deliberations; and become more proactive in identifying and addressing development challenges in their communities.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to building informed, competent, and responsive Assembly Members who can promote accountability, transparency, and sustainable development within the Mampong Municipality and beyond.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly expressed its appreciation to the ILGS, MLGCRA, and NALAG for the initiative and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting continuous capacity building for Assembly Members and staff to enhance effective local governance and improve service delivery to residents.
